FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Counselling and Psychotherapy are 'talking therapies', where a trained therapist works together with a client to explore  and understand emotions, find meaning in difficult circumstances and become more self aware in a safe, non-judgmental and caring environment. Sessions are tailored to each individual depending on their age, interests and presenting issue. Each therapist may have their own individual approach to therapy that reflects the training they have had and their own personality. Regardless of the modality they use, for therapy to be most effective, clients need to feel comfortable and at ease with the therapist. Whilst Counselling usually refers to short term counselling, Psychotherapy is the term used for more long term and intensive therapy.

HOW AND WHERE DO I BEGIN?

If you would like to refer your child or adolescent for counselling, please get in touch using the details on the contact page. Once we have briefly discussed your concerns over the phone or via email, we can book the first appointment. This first appointment will only be with yourself, the parent or guardian of the client. Please do not bring the child or young person to this session as they often feel embarrassed and uncomfortable when spoken about. This session is to gather a complete history of the client- starting with your experience with pregnancy and birth, their early years, family dynamics etc. This session also gives you the chance to see if I would be the right counsellor for you and your family.

In the second session, I will see the child or the young person either on their own, if they feel comfortable, or with you. This session is to assess their willingness to engage in counselling and whether they believe it would be helpful or not. If they are willing, and counselling is deemed appropriate then ongoing sessions are booked.

Similarly, if you are seeking counselling for yourself as a parent or guardian, we can briefly discuss the issues you wish to seek counselling for, following which, our first appointment can be booked.

HOW CAN I CONVINCE MY CHILD OR ADOLESCENT TO GET COUNSELLING?

The simple answer is you can't! Every client needs to not only feel comfortable with their therapist but also be willing to engage in the counselling process. This goes for children and adolescents too. Counselling is hard work and although as a parent you may feel that your child or young person would really benefit from counselling, coercing them into it will only make them feel resentful. Most clients feel nervous and hesitant when they first come to counselling but if they experience their therapist as warm, genuine and trustworthy, and feel ready to engage with them, then counselling is more likely to be successful.

CAN I SIT IN WITH MY CHILD OR ADOLESCENT DURING THE SESSION?

During the first few sessions, some clients prefer to have their parent or guardian sit in with them. This is understandable given the situation is new and can cause some anxiety. However, I will explain to your child or adolescent about the benefits of using the session to have their own space and as an opportunity to fully express themselves. Most children are able to attend the sessions on their own after the first meeting.

You may be seeking counselling to improve your relationship with your child or that the issue you wish to explore involves you both. In these cases, sessions are catered for parent-child or parent-adolescent counselling.

HOW MUCH DO THE SESSIONS COST?

Each session costs £50 and can be paid by bank transfer or card using PayPal.

Please note that there is an additional charge for card payments to reflect the administration costs. Details for a bank transfer, if preferred, will be sent to you via email once an appointment is booked. Payment needs to be made at least 48 hours before the given appointment. If payment is not received in time, the session is cancelled and will need to be re booked. Cancellation of appointments will also have to be made within 48 hours of the appointment or the full fee applies unless due to extenuating circumstances.

A few sessions may be available at a concessionary rate, please contact me to discuss.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

Each session lasts 50 minutes.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL WE NEED?

This is difficult to answer. Some clients only need a few sessions, others require more long term therapy. Every few sessions or so, together with the client, I reflect on how the counselling sessions have been going so far, assess if their needs have changed  and highlight any further areas that may be worth exploring.
